AEL Programs and Classes
Financial Aid is available for our AEL classes. These classes include:
Workplace English (English as a Second Language - ESL)
Workplace English (ESL) classes help you develop practical English skills. These skills are useful for daily conversations and in professional environments. These classes help you prepare for the workplace, college, or career advancement. They focus on improving the reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills you'll need.
Texas Opportunity High School Diploma Student
Earn your high school diploma while completing a college technical program. Build confidence, expand career options, and create a better future for yourself.
GED & High School Equivalency Courses
San Jac is a great place to prepare for the GED and other high school equivalency exams. With our AEL program, you can achieve your high school equivalency at no cost. You may also have your first GED testing attempt covered. To qualify for a GED testing voucher, you must be 21 or older, be approved by your instructor, and live in Texas.

Adult Education & Literacy Grants
We encourage students of all ages and backgrounds to apply for financial aid and grants.
This financial aid is a grant, not a loan, and does not need to be repaid. Awards are based on financial need and support you when enrolled in an AEL program. AEL courses help build foundational skills, earn a high school diploma or GED, and prepare you for careers as an electrocardiogram technician (EKG), medical office professional (MOP), patient care technician (PCT), and other high-demand fields.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) / Adult Secondary Education (ASE) are GED Prep Courses taught based on academic placement test scores. These courses prepare you for the high school equivalency (HSE) test, such as the GED, by teaching math, science, language arts, and social studies.
- Internationally Trained Professionals (ITP) is for English Language Learners (ELLs) and those who have earned a degree or professional credential in another country. This course helps you learn how to find a job or continue your education in the U.S.
- Career Pathways / Integrated Education and Training (IET) offers job training in areas such as electrocardiogram (EKG) technician, medical office professional (MOP), patient care technician (PCT), and more. These courses help students build basic skills while preparing for a job.

Pre-requirements and information:
- Registration and pre-testing are required before any instruction begins to determine program eligibility.
- Be at least 19 years old to register for class.
- If you are 17 or 18, you must be officially withdrawn from public school and have parental consent.
- If you are 16, you must submit a court order requiring GED enrollment and have parental consent.
Acceptable Documentation:
- A valid, unexpired, current government-issued photo ID is required for all participants at registration (cannot be a limited term driver's license or ID)
Preferred documentation: REAL State Identification Card or REAL Driver's License (Texas or other state)
Other acceptable forms of documentation:
- U.S. Citizen - U.S. birth certificate, passport, naturalization certificate
- U.S. National (Born in U.S. territories, e.g., American Samoa) - Passport, birth certificate
- Lawful Permanent Resident - Green Card (Form I-551)
- Refugee - I-94 with code "RE", USCIS approval notice
- Asylee - I-94 with code "AS", asylum grant letter
- Parolee (1+ year) - I-94 marked "Parole" valid ≥ 1 year
- Cuban or Haitian Entrant - I-94 or USCIS notice
- VAWA Self-Petitioner - USCIS letter of approval or prima facie determination.
