Hazing Support

Hazing Policy and support

Hazing is not tolerated at San Jacinto College. Please review the College's policies and available support resources.

What is Hazing?

Prohibited Acts (Hazing):
Any actions taken to initiate, admit, affiliate with, or remain in a student group or organization that cause or are intended to cause physical or emotional harm, discomfort, or that humiliate, degrade, or demean another person are strictly prohibited. This includes formal and informal actions. It also applies regardless of the location, the intent of those involved, or whether the participants consent.

Although hazing typically relates to a person’s initiation into or affiliation with a student group or organization, a hazing violation may be found even without direct evidence that participation was a condition of membership. Hazing is a violation of this Code of Conduct and is also prohibited under Texas law (Texas Education Code §§ 37.151 and 51.936).

Hazing includes, but is not limited to:

  • Striking a student, abandoning a student in an unfamiliar location, blindfolding a student or tying a student’s hands or planning hazing activities to be performed by others
  • Forced consumption of any food, alcohol, drugs, or any other substance
  • Forced physical activity, such as calisthenics
  • Deprivation of food or sleep
  • Any activity that is intended to subject the individual to embarrassment or humiliation
